You wake up on a frosty morning in Bristol, the radiators are stone cold and the boiler is showing a fault. If you have a condensing boiler and it has been below freezing overnight, a frozen condensate pipe is one of the most likely causes. In many cases you can thaw it safely with warm water and reset the boiler yourself. If that doesn’t work, or you’d rather not go outside to do it, our boiler service and repairs team can help across Bristol and Bath. Call us on 01275 400 687.

What the condensate pipe does
Modern condensing boilers recover extra heat from their exhaust gases. As they do, water vapour cools and turns into slightly acidic water, known as condensate. A narrow plastic pipe carries this away to a drain.
When that pipe runs outside, especially along an exposed wall or over a long distance, the water sitting in it can freeze during a cold snap. Once the pipe is blocked with ice, the condensate has nowhere to go. It backs up into the boiler and a safety sensor shuts everything down.
Signs your condensate pipe has frozen
- The boiler has stopped and shows a fault code or warning light
- You can hear gurgling or bubbling from the boiler or the pipe
- The weather has been at or below freezing, often for a night or two
- The outside section of the white or grey plastic pipe feels solid or has ice at the end
How to thaw a frozen condensate pipe safely
Find the pipe
Follow the plastic pipe from the bottom of the boiler to where it leaves the house. The frozen section is usually the part outside, often at a bend or right at the open end where it drains.
Use warm water, not boiling
Pour warm water, roughly the temperature you’d use for washing up, slowly along the outside section of the pipe. A watering can gives you more control than a kettle. Never use boiling water, as it can crack the plastic, and take care on frosty steps or paving where water may refreeze.
Reset the boiler
Once the ice has cleared, reset the boiler following the manufacturer’s instructions. It may take a few minutes to fire up properly. If it locks out again, the pipe may still be partly blocked or there may be a different fault.
What not to do
Don’t try to take the boiler casing off or disconnect anything inside it. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer should work on the internal parts of a gas boiler. If your boiler keeps shutting down even when the weather is mild, that points to another problem, such as the short cycling issues some boilers develop.
Why Bristol and Bath homes get caught out
Winters around Bristol and Bath are often mild, but a clear, still night can still bring a hard frost. Many homes in the area, from Victorian terraces in Bedminster to stone cottages around Bath, had their boilers fitted with the condensate pipe running along an outside wall. Long external runs with little slope are the ones most likely to freeze.
If yours freezes more than once in a winter, it’s worth getting the pipe looked at. A Gas Safe engineer can check whether it’s sized and routed sensibly, whether it can be re-run internally, or whether insulation would help.
Stopping it happening again
- Insulate the outside section with waterproof pipe lagging
- Keep the heating on a low setting overnight during very cold spells, so condensate keeps flowing
- Make sure the end of the pipe isn’t sitting in a puddle or blocked by leaves
- Ask your engineer to check the pipe run when your boiler is serviced
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a kettle of boiling water on a frozen condensate pipe?
No. Boiling water can crack or warp the plastic and leave you with a leak to deal with. Warm water, about the temperature you’d use for washing up, works well. Pour it slowly along the frozen section and give it a few minutes before resetting your boiler. Keep the area clear so the water doesn’t refreeze into a slip hazard.
Will a frozen condensate pipe damage my boiler?
The boiler is designed to shut itself down when condensate can’t drain, so it protects itself rather than continuing to run. Once the pipe is thawed and the boiler is reset, it should work normally. If it keeps locking out or shows a different error, get a Gas Safe engineer to check it before using it again.
How do I know which pipe is the condensate pipe?
It’s usually a plastic pipe around 22mm wide, white or grey, coming from the bottom of the boiler. It often runs through the wall and down the outside of the house into a drain or gully. Metal pipes under the boiler carry gas and water, so leave those alone.
Boiler still not firing up?
If you’ve thawed the pipe and the boiler still won’t restart, give us a call on 01275 400 687 or drop us a message and we’ll get an engineer out to find the fault and get your heating back on.
